God's Unconditional Love

God's Unconditional Love

Have you ever told yourself that you are not enough? Have you ever wondered how a God so holy and righteous loves a sinner like me? Today, we will look at one main passage to help unclose and answer these questions.

In Romans 5:6-8, Paul writes, "For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

From this passage, we see that God proved his love toward us by loving us while we were still sinners. He constantly shows his love to us today by his sacrifice. If you think or believe that God can't love you or can't forgive you, pay close attention to these passages. When I was weak and helpless, Christ came and died for me. He loved me before I ever loved Him. Interesting how it says that God “shows” his love for us; in the present tense. He doesn’t die for us every day, but He loves us every day.

His love towards us is not based on how many sins we commit or how much we read or pray. His love towards us depends on His love for us. In 1 John 4:16, we read, "So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him." (ESV) I know it is hard to grasp, but we must take it by faith. God loves us because He is love. If He wasn't loving, there would be no love on this earth of any kind. Take for example God's love for Israel. In Deuteronomy 7:7-8 it says, "It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that He swore to your fathers..." In other words, God says "I love you... because I love you." For us humans, it doesn't make sense. We like logic. We ourselves love others because of who they are. We don't love someone who has no reason for us to love them. But, God loves us because He is love. He proved His love to us by sending His precious and only Son to die for us. I mean, what else do you need to prove His love for you? You still may be curious why me...

It does not depend on anything we could ever do. If He loved us because of something we were able to do, then we would be able to boast. But, it says that we cannot boast in anyone except for Jesus Christ. Paul states in Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (ESV) This is done so all the glory would belong to God; not us.

    How do we respond?

I need to live my life knowing this. Because He loves me with everlasting love, I am able to come to Him whenever and ask for repentance. No matter how many times I sin or fail, I need to remember this. I always need to run back to the cross because that is where God’s love for me was shown and proven. I encourage you to memorize and believe in this passage; 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (ESV) In Proverbs 24:16, Solomon writes, "for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity." (ESV) How can a righteous fall and rise back up? Is it really by his own righteousness? No. Paul writes in Philippians 3:9, "and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith" (ESV) We are righteous through Jesus Christ; not on our own. The only way we are able to come to God is through Jesus Christ. So, let us live lives that are for the glory of His. Let us abide in His love no matter what we face in life or how we feel. His love for us does not change day-to-day, so my love for Him should not change, except to grow.

    Prayer:

  • Thank God for His love for you
  • Ask God to help you see His love for you more and more
  • Ask God to not let you get to a state where you are careless of what He has done for you.
